Valentine’s Village of Love Live Revue and Dance
New York Night Train’s annual Village of Love Valentine’s dance started in 2007 but, following an existential political threat to Planned Parenthood, DJ Jonathan Toubin and Panache Booking’s Michelle Cable transformed the 2013 Union Pool party into a benefit for the vital women’s health organization’s survival. By 2015, the Village of Love, at this point at Music Hall of Williamsburg, had grown into much more than a dance party and featured an extensive live music bill. By 2018 the event was bicoastal. And by Valentine’s 2020, the Village of Love simultaneously occurred in NYC, L.A., Chicago, San Francisco, and Miami. The most recent edition was exclusively online during the Covid lockdown. Dozens of artists have performed over the years from Mack DeMarco, Ty Segall, Phoebe Bridgers, Kevin Morby, and Best Coast to classics Kathleen Hanna and Adam Horovitz, Tenacious D, Reigning Sound, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and Kid Congo Powers to comedians Eric Andre and Neil Hamburger.
Due to the uncertainties of the omicron epidemic, the NYC edition, the sole national edition this year, was only cobbled together in recent weeks. The current NYC format, debuted in 2020, is distinct from the others in a number of regards. Instead of a slew of bands setting up and tearing down all night, Jonathan Toubin now borrows the process of his soul revues to make the annual benefit a nonstop action-packed event with no dead air. The live music is streamlined via only one band backing up a procession of 24 singers - each covering one of their favorite love songs. Dylan Fernandez and The Heart Beats, the 10-piece show band backing the vocalists, is a local supergroup led by musician/producer/arranger Dylan Fernandez with star players from a slew of notable local acts. The featured vocalists this year are a grassroots aggregation of women from across NYC’s broad underground rock’n’roll spectrum - from punk, electronic, folk, metal, pop, garage, country, and beyond. The show will be MC-ed by Steve Myers of Afghan Whigs and Mighty Fine plus comedian Adira Amram and her sister musician Alana Amram (solo artist formerly of Hunx and His Punx, Death Valley Girls, Habibi, and countless others). The live music segment will be followed by Jonathan Toubin’s Valentine’s dance party tradition and also feature DJs Claudia Gonzalez, Judy Hsu, and Mary Blount of The Baby Shakes. The intent of the event isn’t only to raise awareness and funds for Planned Parenthood, but also an attempt to imbue the Hallmark holiday with a meaning beyond the saccharine consumerism of the occasion and to offer the public an alternative thing to do and place to gather on February 14.
